Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay (1838-1894) was a Bengali writer, poet and journalist who standardized and modernized the prose form of Bengali literature, both in fiction and non-fiction, and is known as sahitya samrat (emperor of literature) in Bengali. India's national song Vande Mataram, which had given rise to the concept of the nation as mother and inspired the Indian nation during its struggle for independence, was taken from his novel Anandamath.- Wikiquote
